User guide
How the story works
The story is told one screen at a time. Each page reveals its text and charts in steps, so keep moving forward to see everything on a page before it changes.
Moving through the story
On a computer, scroll with your mouse or trackpad, or use the Down arrow, Page Down, or Space bar to move forward. Use the Up arrow or Page Up to go back. Press Home to return to the beginning and End to jump to the last page.
On a phone or tablet, swipe up to move forward and swipe down to go back.
Progress bar
The red bar across the top of the screen shows how far you are through the story. Click or drag along it to jump to any page. When the bar is focused, the Left and Right arrow keys move one page at a time.
Charts
All figures are documented minimums as of the latest data update.
Tooltips
Two charts show a tooltip with more detail when you move your mouse over them.
“How were people killed?” : the first bubble chart on this page, covering all years. Hover over a bubble to see the method, its number of documented cases, and its share of all cases. The “By year” bubble chart that follows it does not have tooltips.
“Cases by method and year” : hover over a dot to see the method, the year, the number of recorded fatalities, and a short description of the incident where one is available.
Menu
Open the menu in the top-right corner to switch between this guide and the methodology, which explains how massacres are defined, counted, and sourced. Select the site title at any time to return to the story.
